What is a baitrunner reel?
As already mentioned, you need a baitrunner reel if you want to be successful with sturgeon and carp fishing, among other things. The baitrunner reel was first introduced to the market by Shimano in 1987, and it quickly proved to be a success among anglers for both freshwater and saltwater fishing.
A baitrunner reel is designed with both a primary and a secondary drag system. When you activate the secondary drag system, it means that the spool is free, but still controlled. This way, the fish can take the bait without feeling the very light drag. In addition, a baitrunner reel has the clear advantage that it allows you to fish with several rods at the same time. You do not have to reel the fish in immediately, even if the fish has bitten the bait, which is why you can, for example, pick up your second fishing rod and put the hook on it.
It is the secondary drag system that sets baitrunner reels apart from other conventional fishing rods. It is important that there is enough tension on the line so that it does not get tangled and at the same time that a carp or sturgeon can bite the bait without being startled.
Shimano baitrunner – wide selection of Shimano baitrunner reels
Shimano was the first to produce baitrunner reels, and on this page you will of course find a wide selection of baitrunner reels from Japanese Shimano. Take for example our popular Shimano Ultegra XTD Surf , which is tailored for serious fishermen who cast far and who need to have heavy sturgeon, carp or similar on the hook. If you want an alternative from Shimano, the Shimano Baitrunner ST-RB, for example, is a dynamic and rock-solid fishing reel with a super balance in the reel itself – and it is the cheapest Shimano baitrunner to date.
Daiwa baitrunner reel
