Get started with fly fishing
Fly fishing is so much fun. Like everything else, it takes practice before you completely master casting techniques, etc. The great advantage of fishing is that with the fly rod you can create a very special presentation of your bait in the water, where you can fish very slowly, but still incredibly lively and seductive.
With a fly rod you have a limited casting distance. In addition, you should also be aware that backcasting requires space, which means that in some places it is not possible to use the fly rod. That is why smaller boats are often used when fly fishing.
Depending on how big flies you want to fish with, and how effortlessly you want to cast them, we recommend fly rods from class 8 to class 10. A class 9 rod, with a typical casting weight of around 20-21 grams, and preferably with a really good backbone, is a really good place to start when it comes to fly fishing for pike.
Fly lines are also an important element. Here you cannot blindly trust that, for example, a class 8 rod will always cast well, just by choosing a class 8 line. Here, however, you should look at the weight specifications on the two and make sure that they just roughly match, and preferably such that the casting weight of the line or exceeds the 'capabilities' of the rod.
The flies that are primarily used for fly fishing are the so-called flash flies. Calling them flies is perhaps a bit misleading, as they do not in any way resemble flies or any other types of insects. On the other hand, they most often imitate a fish or an eel, and most of all resemble an overly decorated Christmas tree. They basically consist of a lot of flash, tied on a hook – and preferably in a way that makes them as full as possible.
You can also easily tie a pike fly from feathers or other natural materials such as marabou, rabbit and fox strips. But we recommend the flash flies. The clear strength of the flash flies is that they do not absorb water and therefore do not become quite as heavy to cast as flies tied from natural materials. They have an incredibly seductive and pulsating movement in the water that no other bait comes close to.
