Choose the right fly!
Fly fishing without flies is just a cast! Along with rod and line, it is one of the most important elements to focus on. There are thousands of flies. Coastal flies, river flies, dry flies, tube flies, wet flies, pike flies and put and take flies are probably the most well-known, but the list doesn't stop there. Are you curious or are you looking for your next fly? See all flies in our range .
With so many flies available, there are at least as many different ways to tie the flies. The way flies are tied and the materials used have developed a lot over the years. It has become cheaper - but not at all worse. In the past, natural materials such as feathers, skin and hair from various animals were often used, but today just as many synthetic materials are also used.
The natural and synthetic materials are found in an extremely wide range of products, and it can therefore be very confusing to get started. There are hair & skin, feathers & marabou, neck & saddle leather, flash materials and synthetic materials; just to name a few. If you want to get started, there are also starter kits for fly tying . Then it doesn't get any easier to get started easily.
Fly line has also evolved
It is not only flies that have seen a great development - the fly line has also developed a lot. The old DT (double tapered) fly lines are still available. These lines are not developed with the same taper as the modern WF lines. It can be difficult to find the correct line for your needs and it may be necessary to talk to an expert about this. If you are in doubt about the choice of equipment, we are always ready with polite service and advice. Contact us on 71718080 or fiskegrej@fluer.dk.
In Denmark we are also very happy with shooting heads for coastal fishing for sea trout, but also for the river for both salmon and sea trout. This type of line is developed so that you can quickly cast 20-25 meters. Shooting heads are often 8-10 m long, and you therefore always add a running line/shooting line, which is very light and thin.
You should always remember that your fishing line must match the rod. When you buy a fly rod, it will always be marked with its class. The class will often be marked with # followed by a number. In the same way, the lines, including your fly line, will have the same marking. It is therefore easy to match lines with rods, without further difficulty. The difficulty only arises when the equipment also has to match the surroundings in which you fish - and the casting style you have as an angler. The latter, however, is something that comes with time.
Choose the right fly rod!
Your choice of fly rod should depend on what type of fishing you want to do as a starting point. There is a big difference between fly fishing in put and take lakes, compared to fishing on the often “harder” coast. As a starting point, it would be obvious to practice fly fishing in put and take lakes before trying your hand at the sea. In fact, it is often recommended that you practice your casting in the garden before you even head out to the water.
When choosing a fly rod, fly reel and fly line for fly fishing, there is also a difference in quality and materials. It is important to buy equipment that fits together, but also suits the individual type of fly fishing. If you do not have knowledge about the subject yourself, ally yourself with someone who does. Alternatively, it is a good idea to seek advice before purchasing.
