Pike fishing - How to catch the big predatory fish
Do you also dream of catching the really big fish that pulls the line well and gives you a fight to the line? Then you might want to try going after the lake's big predatory fish - the pike. There is a very special excitement and adrenaline rush to pike fishing, which can be hard to let go of once you have tried it.
The pike is one of the largest predatory fish in Danish waters - and it is therefore a good idea to familiarize yourself with pike fishing before you dive in for the first time. It is a fish that can be both large and heavy, so if your pike fishing is to be successful, it also requires good equipment .
If you catch a pike weighing over 5 kilos, you've got a nice catch on the hook - but the pike can weigh almost 20 kilos. In addition, it can also grow to a length of 130 centimeters - so it's not without reason that it's one of Denmark's largest freshwater fish.
Season and protection for pike fishing
You can fish for pike at many times during the year, but during the pike fishing season it can be easier to bring home a large and heavy fish. In addition, there is also a conservation area for pike fishing that you should be aware of. You are not allowed to fish for pike during the entire month of April, as this is the time when they spawn. After spawning, the pike loses weight as it no longer carries a lot of eggs.
If you are looking for one of the really heavy pike, then you can try pike fishing in March. In the spring months, the pike can also sometimes be more aggressive because they are hungry, which can make them easier to catch. Otherwise, there is also a pike fishing season in October and November, but during these cold months the pike seeks out the deep water.
Pike fishing - what you need to remember
In addition to the fact that pike are protected in April, there are also other rules when it comes to pike fishing. If you catch a pike under 60 centimeters, you are not allowed to take it home. And if you catch a pike that you do not intend to eat, it is also important that you release it back into the water. The pike is part of the water's ecosystem, and it helps maintain the balance of the fish population. In this way, you can contribute to more sustainable pike fishing.
The best equipment for pike fishing
With such a big and heavy fish on the hook, you need proper equipment to be able to fight. The pike has many teeth, and they are quite sharp. You may therefore need a braided line for pike fishing, if the pike is not to be able to just bite the line. You also need a good fishing rod and a strong fishing reel .
Pike fishing equipment comes in many sizes and classes - but it's better to be well prepared, because you never know if you'll hook one of the big ones. It would be a bit of a shame if the equipment can't handle it.
For pike fishing you also need a pike leader , which can strengthen the line and make the pike fly move in an enticing way for the pike. When it comes to bait for pike fishing, there are different options - but it is important that the bait is large enough. As another important tool, we recommend that you bring a partner. Pike fishing can get a bit wild if you catch a big, heavy and aggressive pike.
