How to catch garfish
The hornfish is known as a grateful prey for beginners, and here we give you a few tips on how to ensure a bite on your fishing trip.
If your fishing rod has been stored away since last year's garfishing, it may be an advantage to put on a new line. A thin nylon line weakens quickly and is the absolute weakest link in the fishing gear. A soft line can therefore cost you many lost flashes in the tang and not least garfish.
The bony beak of the garfish with its small teeth makes it difficult for the hook to get stuck. It is therefore important that there are sharp hooks on your lures and flies. One trick is to set the hook 5-7 centimeters behind the lure, this will result in fewer lost fish, as the hook will then get caught further back in the garfish's mouth.
It is good to have a small selection of both jigs and spinners. Models between 10 and 18 grams usually catch well, while the colors can vary, but silver, gold and copper are often used. Cast out and reel in at a high pace, the jig will dance through the water.
You will often have difficulty attracting garfish right after arriving at the shore. Here it can be an advantage to let your lure imitate injured prey. You will sometimes be able to feel small jolts in the line when a garfish pursues the lure and strikes it with its long beak. Here it can increase your chances of hooking the playful garfish, to reel in quickly on the reel and then stop and let the lure sink a little. The garfish will think it is injured prey and therefore pick it up with its mouth, allowing the hook to grab the fleshy part of the garfish's mouth.

If you can't get garfish to bite on your lures, natural bait may be the solution. Small pieces of herring attached to the hook may be the surest way to get garfish to bite. A piece of the tail piece from a caught garfish or other fish pieces can also be used.
If you want to fly fish in saltwater, garfish are an optimal prey. Here, small furry flies tied with wool or dubbing are used. A light fly rod with a floating line and a handful of flies in red and brown colors are all that is needed.
