Catch your first pike
Pike can be fished in almost all Danish bogs and lakes. What makes pike an exciting catch is that it is the largest predatory fish we have in Denmark. Pike is very hardy, which means that it can live in almost all types of water, and you can most likely find it near you.
Even though you are likely to be fishing in a place where the pike are, it doesn't matter where you cast your line. The pike loves to lie in wait in the dense reed forest, where it can lie in wait before pouncing on its prey. Under water lilies is also a good hiding place for the pike. Here it cannot be spotted by birds of prey, while at the same time being well located in relation to the small fish that love to swim in the shade.
It can therefore be a good idea to cast to dense vegetation. In larger lakes, pike are often found in deep, open water, and are therefore easiest to reach by boat.
The pike is equipped with hundreds of small, sharp, backward-pointing teeth, which enable it to hold on to small fish. These teeth are so sharp that they can easily cut through both thick nylon and braided line. Therefore, it is very important that when fishing for pike, you use a leader made of either steel or nylon of at least 0.50 mm. The steel leader is the safest choice, as the pike often rolls around in the water when it is caught and thereby entangles itself in the leader and later the line. There are also teeth along the gill rakers that can easily cut the fishing line when it rolls around.
It is a good idea to bring extra accessories for your fishing trip if you are fishing for pike. It is important that you handle the pike with the utmost care, both to protect the fish and to protect yourself from the sharp teeth. A pair of pliers is therefore indispensable when you need to get the hook out from between the many teeth in the mouth. A pair of heavy gloves can also be good to bring, so that you protect your hands from the sharp teeth, which are also located in the gill cover.
There is important information you need to know before fishing for pike. Pike are protected from April 1st to April 30th in freshwater and from April 1st to May 15th in brackish water. In addition, the pike must measure at least 60 centimeters, and if it does not meet this measurement, it must be returned to the water as gently as possible.
