Mayflies

The mayfly is the largest mayfly we have in Denmark. These mayflies set the agenda from mid-May to mid-June, depending on the weather, hatching can vary from two to four weeks.

During this period it is important to have a selection of mayflies in your fly box. What makes mayfly fishing so fascinating is first and foremost seeing the large numbers of mayflies. At the same time, you experience the otherwise shy fish going completely crazy in a few days in a feeding frenzy that you are only allowed to witness for almost three weeks.

 

With the right mayfly during mayfly season, you have the opportunity to make the catch of the year, because the river's large and otherwise shy fish are eager during this period.

To get the most out of your mayfly, it is important that you are able to spot which mayflies are dancing on the water in the stream you are fishing in. If you notice that the fish are nibbling on the swarming mayflies, it is a good idea to attach a fly that resembles the live ones.

Mayflies and large brown trout

To get in touch with the large brown trout, endurance, caution and knowledge of the fish's behavior are required. The special characteristic of the Danish brown trout is the plump snout and yellow belly.

The large brown trout have not become large without reason. They are extremely cautious and shy, and they rarely throw this caution overboard.

Maybe only once or twice a season when the size or quantity of food makes them go crazy, they are going to get them to bite. The mayfly is a good example of a food item that can make the majority of brook trout careless.

However, it is important that you know your stream and know whether the mayflies hatch here, as a sufficiently large number of hatched mayflies are needed to arouse the fish's interest.

May fly fishing is probably the only period when all the river's brook trout, both small, large and the very largest, participate in an otherworldly feast, and where your chances as an angler of catching your trophy trout are the greatest.

However, as a recreational fly fisherman, you may find that the mayflies are starting to hatch, and you think that the perfect fishing period has started, but then the rain sets in. As we are so used to in Denmark, the weather can be very unstable, and the beginning warm period can quickly be interrupted by rain and cooler temperatures. Such a change in temperature will immediately leave its mark on the hatching, which will come to a standstill due to the rain and lower temperatures. Here you will have to wait for the sun to find its way again and warm everything up, so that the hatching can be started again.

There is no fishery on the planet that can match the fishing during this period. Virtually everyone will have success with the aggressive fish. Even the river's absolute largest and most cautious fish have strayed from the depths and are willing to take risks.
