What is a herring trap?
A herring lure is a lure used to catch herring. The herring lure is designed with a long line and a varying number of hooks as well as pearls or pearl-colored feathers that lure the herring. The lure is tied to the fishing line, after which a 40-50 g lure is tied to the lure.
The foreline is designed with several hooks, which makes it possible to catch several herring at once. Herring are so-called schooling fish, which always move very close to each other. The school of herring comes and goes, so it can be difficult to spot, but once it is found, there is an opportunity to catch many herring. In fact, you can stand on the harbor quay and see that there are starting to be bites further up the quay, but only a short time later your foreline will also be filled - perhaps several times in a row.
Mackerel stock vs. herring precursor
Mackerel jigs and herring jigs are very similar to each other. Some jigs are designed to be used for both mackerel and herring, such as our Mustad Sabiki Fluo Pink Flasher Rig, Mackerel and herring jig . Often, however, a herring jig will be smaller than a mackerel jig. Herring have a very small mouth and therefore a small jig should be used to catch them. When you are out fishing, it is very different from day to day which jigs work best. Therefore, it is a good idea to have several with you so that you can test different jigs.
How do you choose a herring trap?
Which herring lure should you choose and why are there so many different ones? There are because even a herring can be picky. One day they want small hooks and real skin, but another day they prefer a small colored feather. That's why it's a good idea to buy several different ones that you can test on your fishing trip.
There is also a big difference in the number of hooks on herring lines. Since the fish do not weigh much, you can easily catch between 5 and 8 at a time if you use a line with this number of hooks.
In short, you should consider the following when choosing herring bait:
-
Feel free to buy several different herring preparations: The best herring preparation varies from day to day because fish are picky.
-
The more hooks, the more fish: Catch more fish with a line with many hooks. On the other hand, a line with many hooks will also be heavier to lift out of the water.
-
Hook size: Larger hooks catch larger fish and smaller hooks catch smaller fish.
-
Think about the weight: Your fishing rod and fishing line must be able to hold the weight of up to 10 herrings and your 40-50 g lure. For herring fishing, a fishing rod of 8-9 feet with a casting weight of approximately 100 g is recommended.
The best herring bait
Here are some of the baits that we consider to be the best herring baits:
-
The best herring rig recommended by Fluer: Catch up to 10 herring with the Fladen Deep Sea Rig rig , which is one of our most popular herring rigs. With this rig you get the maximum benefit from every fishing trip!
-
The best herring jig for mackerel and herring fishing: One of our bestsellers is the Westland Herring and Mackerel jig , which is available in several different variants. This is a classic mackerel jig, which can also be used as a herring jig. Choose between jigs with 5-7 hooks and different hook sizes.
Although herring jigs are designed differently, they are mounted in the same way. The upper part of the jig is tied securely to the fishing rod line and the lower part of the jig is tied to a 40-50 g jig. Jigging rods can also be used instead of jigs.
Catch herring from the shore or from a boat
A school of herring is constantly moving, so it is possible to catch herring both along the shore and from a boat. If you are fishing from the shore, you should cast your line far out into the water, where a school of herring will hopefully swim by, while you slowly pull the line in. If you are fishing from a boat, on the other hand, you should lower your leader and fishing line directly into the water, which may require using heavier lures. From a boat, it is the upward movement of the leader, which is pulled out of the water again, that attracts the herring.
At Fluer we have many different lures and packages with both herring lures and lures to tie at the end. If you have difficulty choosing, please contact us! We can help you buy the right herring lures, so you can get a herring on the hook - that is, on the fishing trip!
