Description

The Whiting Spey Hackle Hen Cape is a premium set of small to medium sized feathers specifically designed for tying Spey and Dee flies, known for their distinctive swept-back profiles and flowing action in fast-moving water. Originally, feathers from the now rare Spey Cock roosters of the Spey River Valley in Scotland were ideal for these flies. However, as the Spey Cock population diminished and legal protections limited the use of heron species feathers traditionally employed in such flies, the need arose for high-quality substitutes.

Whiting has developed a "genetic" Spey Hackle through dedicated selection over several years, combining traits such as long, substantial barbs without webbing, robust non-brittle feathers, and excellent density, ensuring great value to fly tiers. This genetic stock comes in an array of natural and dyed colors to inspire creativity, along with a range of feather sizes suitable for various fly sizes. These feathers excel particularly as front or palmer hackles on streamers and salmon flies.

  • Ideal for tying Spey and Dee flies needing swept-back feather profiles.
  • Genetically selected feathers with long barbs, no webbing, and high durability.
  • Available in various colors including natural and dyed options.
  • Suitable for use as front or palmer hackle on streamers and salmon flies.
  • Small to medium feather sizes support a wide range of fly sizes.

Fishing methods: Fly fishing, including classic salmon streamer patterns.

Target species: Salmon.

  • No rush or rush

Despite being busy with many orders, due to wild prices, I received my 3rd order for May/June today without any errors or defects. Since some of the items I had ordered were sold out, I was contacted by Rene, who I assume is partly a warehouse worker for Fluer, and together we found a good alternative.
